There is nothing quite like the Bartender Olympics at Put-in-Bay. Hosted by the Roundhouse Bar, the annual Olympics celebrated their 20th year in 2003. This year, 2004 marked the fourth time the island Olympics have coincided with the actual Olympic Games.
The night begins about 5:30 p.m. as teams stream into the Winterbar at the Park Hotel, adjacent to the Roundhouse. As the seats around the tables fill, the different bartenders and servers are wearing themed t-shirts or other uniforms identifying their team members.
Officials explain the rules and within just minutes a comprehensive quiz and a free pour contest are administered. As the teams finish they move down to the Depot at the far end of Delaware Avenue where they begin to prepare for the parade and opening ceremonies.
The parade of floats passes the judges on the Roundhouse porch, loops the park and then parks behind the hotel as the Olympians gather in the park across from the bar for the lighting of the Olympic flame.
Street games follow and then everyone heads inside for the creative portion of the evening: an original drink and skit or performance by the individual teams.
The Crescent has been a part of the Olympics since the games were introduced in 1983. Crescent teams have taken home their share of the hardware over the years.
The annual Bartender Olympics are held in August each year and will be held in 2006 on August 16.
