Life on an island. It's pretty much the same as any other place to live, except for the travel. Islanders, year-round and seasonal, need to plan a little more when making trips between the island and mainland.
The cost factor in traveling to the doctor, dentist, a concert, mainland shopping, visiting friends and family requires a little extra planning.
Put-in-Bay does not have a doctor, but the island is services by a staff of full time paramedics working with Toledo St. Vincent Hospital and LifeFlight. There isn't a pharmacy on the island. There isn't a dentist. There are no malls, so there are no shoe stores, or a discount store like Wal-Mart.
There is an auto repair shop if your car needs to be fixed, a post office and a pretty large grocery store for a small island with its own butcher shop, but there isn't a barber or a place to get your watch repaired.
If you plan to work on the island for a season, plan to prepare before you arrive. You'll need several pairs of shorts for work and at least two pairs of good sneakers -- nearly everyone spends a lot of time on their feet during work. You also will need a sweater and a jacket, a supply of toiletries, flip-flops for the shower, towels, bed linens, a blanket or comforter, a battery operated alarm clock -- since the power occasionally goes out here -- and a supply of any medicine you may be taking.
When packing, leave 75 percent of what you think you'll need at home. That's how much clothing you'll never wear and will only lug to the island and then back to school in the fall.
You don't need a vehicle on the island and if you have one, we suggest you keep it on the mainland. It costs $26 round-trip for just a car on the Miller ferry. It's difficult to bring a car across on Fridays and nearly impossible to leave during the day on Sundays during the season.
Don't forget your swim suit, aloe vera for the sun burn you may get and your driver's license. Come prepared to have fun and to work hard.
Put-in-Bay has about 500 year-round residents. During the summer, college age workers and seasonal residents push the number closer to 2,500. You'' find plenty to do at work and during your free time.
Besides the local attractions and the Chamber's events, there are also softball games, water skiing, swimming, fishing, an historical museum and more to enjoy while you spend your summer on an island.
